QUIRKS
A quirk is something special that only a few people can do. These could be feats of strength, feats of biology or even feats that are unexplained. If you are unfamiliar with boku no hero academia, then the next closest example is X-men. Same thing as the powers they have.
In the manga of Boku No Hero Academia it is explained that quirks appear in individuals that are missing the second joint in their smallest two. Here, that will be the most common reason. But we will also include scientific and supernatural explanations.
If your character is not missing their second joint in their smallest two, then they probably got bit by a spider, drank a strange chemical or ran into a supernatural creature.
Quirks come in many shapes and sizes. Some are powerful and useful while others are strange or useless. Then there are some that start weak, but as they are trained up become incredibly powerful. Or some that will only shine in given situations.
There are some things to consider for your character's quirk.
QUIRK NAME. While quirks can be categorized, they are not named arbitrarily. It is an individuals choice what to call their own quirk. This is important because some day the character may be asked what their quirk is, and they may want it to sound cool or subtle depending on the effect they want in that situation.
QUIRK TYPE. Even in boku no hero academia they tend to forget these exist. There are physical, emission, elemental, mutant, form changing, supernatural, so on.
APPLICATIONS. A quirk is a vague theme of what the character is capable of. For example a character could manipulate gravity. The quirk addresses what and how. But an application answers the question 'how does that help me?' It is the specific way or ways your character uses their quirk. One application could allow the gravity manipulator to reduce their gravity and float. Another application could increase the gravity on objects so that they hit harder.
APPLICATION LEVEL. Application levels go from 0 to 5. A level 0 application/skill will be more likely to backfire or show the quirk's weakness than a level 5. It will also be simple, doing at most one thing. A level 5 application would be more complex and have more ways it can be used. A level 5 application would also seem as if it has no flaw or weakness.
WEAKNESS. No quirk is perfect. The more overpowered a quirk may seem, and the more weaknesses, flaws or handicaps it should come with. An example of a weakness would be if an ice manipulator using their quirk for too long would risk giving them frostbite.
NUMBERS. I come from a site where we have two large guides with a lot of numbers. How much can be lifted at this rank. How fast can I run at this rank. How much damage can I deal at this rank. We are going to try to do without that. If it seems necessary later we will add it, but for now we will trust our members to use reason. Ask yourself what your skills/applications are doing and understand that the more strengths they have, the more they should be hampered by their weakness. If strength and weakness were placed on a bar. At level 0 we would be on the weakness side of the bar with just a little strength showing. At level 5 we would be on the strength side of the bar with just a little weakness showing.
DEVELOPMENT. If you are reading this, congratulations. You read. Not everyone does that. By now you must be wondering how you develop your quirk. How you can more skills/applications. How you level up those skills applications. You're probably thinking that you have not seen exp or money, so those aren't used to get these upgrades. Maybe you're thinking training threads will be used?
Sort of. On MHA skill development is rather simple. One thread to one upgrade. If you complete a thread where you character used their quirk and exerted themselves, then you get an upgrade. This means your hero could be fighting a villain or training at Yuuei. However, there are no upgrades for threads where there were no use of the quirk. If you want to upgrade a quirk through the use of a social thread, then there'd have to be a situation like having a healing quirk, and helping someone that got injure. We would love it if our members only upgraded quirks when it is logical in characterly, but just follow these guidelines here. Oh, and there are no upgrades if a thread is five or less rounds long!
